"Kurokawa-onsen" in Oguni Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a notable hot spring resort in Japan.

Being located in the north of Mt. Aso, one of the world's largest active volcanoes, Kurokawa hot spring resort peacefully stands on both sides of a brook. This resort features "relaxation in harmony with nature".

All the 24 ryokans, Japanese style hotels, were built keeping nature from being destroyed, and most of them have their own open-air baths made of natural materials such as wood and stone. You will feel, while bathing under the sky, as if you were in the midst of deep woods or in the brook. There are hardly any signboards, and even the mailbox on the street as well as familiar store signs of big chain stores are modified from original bright colors to sober ones. This comprehensive landscape design plan has been implemented by the association of the local ryokans. As a result of their long-running efforts, this resort had gradually attracted women's attention since the 1970s, and it finally gets all glory.
