At the southernmost tip of the Kii Peninsula, within walking distance of JR Kushimoto Station, about 40 rocks vertically stand in line stretching the length of 850 meters.
As these rocks seen to be bridge piers, which are called 'hashigui' in Japanese, they are named Hashigui-Iwa.
*Iwa means rock.
Massive volcanic rock, formed by volcanic activity in ancient times, soaked into soft mudstone. Thereafter hard volcanic rocks came out on the surface by encroachment.
