A custom to visit the tree major Shinto shrines in Wakayama Prefecture, so-called 'Kumano Sanzan' had spread throughout Japan from the 10th to 18th century. The Imperial family in Kyoto first, thereafter, the number of commoners had gradually increased. The long line of the pilgrims to Kumano Sanzan used to be likened to ants walking in a line. Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes in the picture were built for these religious people. Three routes of six are on the list of the World Heritage. As these old routes are opened to the public, many hikers are found there.
