The main building of this museum is a component of World Heritage 'The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier, an Outstanding Contribution to the Modern Movement', together with other buildings in six countries. Being built in 1959 to exhibit the Western Arts collected by Mr. Kojiro Matsukata, one of the greatest businessmen, politicians as well, before the Second World War, the authorities of this museum have been continuing to collect other precious Western Arts. Thus, this museum deserves to be one of the best museums in Japan focusing on Western Arts. The main building, as shown in the picture, was totally renovated in 1998 to equip earthquake resisting device.
