The cable railway of Mt. Takao started in 1927 as the second cable railway service in Japan.

Mt Takao, 599 meters high, in Hachioji City, Tokyo, is a popular trekking area thanks to great access from the heart of Tokyo. This cable railway was planned for the convenience of the visitors to Yakuo-in Buddhist Temple located halfway up the mountain. And secondly opened in 1927 after Ikoma cable railway in Nara Prefecture built in in 1918. As the chair lifts were additionally constructed in 1963 beside this railway, the visitors can choose their favorite one according to the weather condition. The carriage runs for 6 minutes along the steep slope covered with rich green, 1 kilometer long and 270 meters of the difference of altitude.

Speaking of which, this features Japan's steepest railway slope, the tilt angle of 31 degrees.

It takes about 20 minutes on foot from the station on the mountainside to Yakuo-in Temple.
