Jindai-ji in Chofu City is the second oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo.

Jindai-ji, built in 733, is the second oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, after Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. This was reduced to ashes, however, two times in 1646 and 1865. Thus the main hall in the first picture was rebuilt about 100 years ago. The second picture shows San-mon Gate built in 1695, which is the oldest building of this temple. Shaka-Nyorai Buddhist image, which was made in the 7th century and is enshrined in Shaka-do hall, is designated a national treasure. The temple bell, manufactured in 1376, is an important cultural asset. This neighborhood is blessed with good water from many natural springs, so buckwheat, making the best use of a lot of water, is a well-known local specialty.
