Daijoin Temple, built by a high-ranking priest of Kofukuji Temple in Nara City in 1087, had been a prestigious temple since it was one of the Monzeki Temples, the head priest of which traditionally was a member of the Imperial Family. Daijoin Temple is gone though, the gardens of it in the picture are thought to be one of the prototypes of traditional Japanese garden. These gardens had long been highly praised as the best gardens in Nara, because they were largely renovated by a famous garden designer in the 15th century. They were once abandoned in the 19th century though, the authority restored them in recent years. The original landscape was carefully studied by the specialists for the restoration work, and was opened to the public in 2010.
