Otani-Honbyo in Kyoto is the Graveyard of Shinran, the founder of Jodo-Shinshu Sect of Buddhism.

Updated: Jul 3

Being adjacent to Gojo-zaka slope, one of the approaches to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Otani-Honbyo is lying with solemnity. Shinran passed away in 1263 and was buried under a modest tombstone in Higashiyama, Kyoto. Long after that, his remains were moved to present Otani-Honbyo as shown in the picture by his followers in 1603. A charnel house and cemetery for common devotees of Jodo-Shinshu Sect are annexed to this facility. A morning market is regularly held here on the 16th of each month, as the 16th is the date of Shinran's death. This market has long been loved by the locals.
