The origin of this temple dates back to the end of the 6th century. As one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan, this originally was one of the important facilities of nearby 'Shitennoji' Buddhist temple. The original name at that time was 'Seyaku-in', which was equipped with a medicobotanical garden for many sick people. The name was changed to 'Shoman-in' thereafter, and 'Kondo' main hall in the picture as well as 'Tahoh-to' tower were rebuilt by Tokugawa Shogun family in the 16th-17th century. As 'Aizen-myooh' Buddhist statue is enshrined in this Kondo main hall, this temple has turned out to be known by the name of 'Aizen-do'. Aizen-myooh Buddhist statue is widely known for the god of marriage and matrimonial happiness. Many young girls, who are looking forward to meeting a new partner, rush hear during the New Year's holiday.
