Well-known Kofukuji Buddhist Temple, dating back to the 7th century, is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan. After the relocation to the present site at the beginning of the 8th century, it had enjoyed the highest prosperity, as one of the strongest Buddhist powers with a great number of fighting monks, under the protection of the Imperial Family. Talking of Kofuku-ji, the five-storied pagoda (National treasure) rebuilt in 1426 is very well known. On the other hand, Hokuendo hall (National treasure) in the first picture, which is said to be most beautiful octagonal hall in Japan and was elected to sooth the spirit of Fujiwara Fuhito who was the most important supporter of this temple, is a must-see. And the three-storied pagoda (National treasure) in the second picture, which was dedicated by the consort of the Emperor Sutoku in 1143 is another must-see. These two buildings are the oldest ones standing in the precincts of Kofuku-ji.
